EC seeks to boost broadband spending

The European Commission (EC) is seeking to improve spending on broadband in a bid to give member states more reliable connections.

Its aim is to ensure every household has access to basic broadband by 2013, while super-fast connections should be implemented by 2020.

Each member state has been asked to come up with a plan of action, in which they must state what measures they will use to ensure the targets are met.

They must also establish how much the project is likely to cost in their respective countries.

The cost of the project has not yet been determined, but the EC will do all it can to make sure that it is as cost-effective and efficient as possible.

It was recently discovered by Ofcom that 45% of broadband users in the UK view switching to a new service as too much hassle, leading them to stay with the same provider for years on end.

Talk's not cheap as home phone giants hike prices

Two of Britain's biggest home phone providers will increase their prices on the 1st October.

BT and TalkTalk are both putting up their charges and for some customers this will be the second price jump this year.

From 1st October, BT customers who don't pay up front for a 12 month contract will see their call charges and connection costs go up by 10%, while call set-up fees will increase to 10.9p and daytime call rates to 6.4p per minute. Line rental will rise 50p to £13.29 for customers receiving paper bills, or £12.04 for those receiving them electronically.

For TalkTalk customers, daytime call rates are set to climb to 6.4p and line rental and call set-up fees will go up to £12.04 a month and 10.9p respectively.
